Effects of symmetric instability in the Kuroshio Extension region in winter

Submesoscale symmetric instability (SI) in the ocean surface mixed layer (SML) plays a significant role forward energy cascade and vertical material transports. Due to its small spatial scales of typically less than 1 km, SI is not resolved by current climate models most regional models. This work investigates effects Kuroshio Extension (KE) region using parameterization scheme implemented Coastal Regional Ocean Community Model (CROCO). Compared SI-lacking model at same resolution 500 m, SI-parameterized more closely resembles an ultra-high (20 m) non-hydrostatic that intended resolve directly on basis evaluating source SI: geostrophic shear production. As restratifies SML, simulates shallower SML depth KE compared one, which closer observed state. The potential vorticity also modulated reduction negative PV found due parameterized SI. results here demonstrate capability representation impacts improvement simulation KE.
